I. College Level Examination Program (CLEP)/ Defense Activity Test and
Examination Services Subject Standardized Tests (DSST)/Excelsior

1. Florida Community College's Assessment and Certification Centers administer the CLEP, DSST, and Excelsior exams and maintain a list of current our course equivalents for each exam. The State Articulation Coordinating Committee determines course equivalents.

2. Upon successfully passing a CLEP, DSST, or Excelsior exam, the student will be awarded the equivalent course credit. Credit is posted to the student's transcript by the appropriate Assessment and Certification Center. Awarded credit will be indicated with a P (pass) and is not counted toward the student's GPA.

II. Advanced Placement (AP) and International Baccalaureate (IB) credit

AP and IB tests are evaluated and input by the State Articulation Coordinating Committee, but they are not administered at FCCJ. Students receive a P (Pass) as a grade, and AP and IB credit is not counted in the student's GPA although it is counted for graduation requirements. The State Articulating Coordinating Committee determines courses for which credit is awarded.

III. Proficiency Examination Program (PEP) Exams

1. When a faculty member wishes to give credit by assessment for a college credit course and a CLEP or DSST exam does not exist for that particular course, a PEP exam may be developed.

2. The originating faculty member develops the exam and scoring guide and determines the appropriate grading scale. PEP tests will only be administered by appointment.

3. The originating faculty member ensures that all faculty who teach the course have an opportunity to review and to provide input into the exam through their department or college wide coordinating team.

4. The originating faculty member completes the Application for Non-College Sponsered Credit available from the Registrar's Office, attaches the exam and scoring guide, documents the process of review by other faculty, and initiates the approval process.

5. The approved assessment is forwarded to the appropriate Assessment and Certification Center manager (PEP process owner) who maintains a list of approved PEP exams.

6. Students wishing to take an assessment may do so at any Assessment and Certification Center. Credit, if awarded, will be entered on the student's transcript by the appropriate Assessment and Certification Center.

IV. Competency-Based Assessments

1. Competency-based assessments such as hands-on performance assessments, course project or portfolio assignments, or other faculty-administered competency assessments may be developed for college credit and workforce credit courses.

2. The originating faculty member develops the assessment and scoring procedures.

3. The originating faculty member ensures that all faculty who teach the course have an opportunity to review and to provide input into the assessment.

4. The originating faculty member completes the Proficiency-Based Exam Program (PEP) Credit by Examination: New Exam Approval Form available from the Registrar's Office, attaches relevant assessment materials, documents the review by other faculty, and initiates the approval process.

5. The approved assessment is forwarded to the appropriate program manager(s) or associate dean. The Program Development Office maintains a list of all approved assessments.

6. Students wishing to take an assessment must contact the program manager or associate dean to arrange for administration of the assessment. Regular full-time faculty who are currently certified to teach the course may administer the assessment.

7. If credit is to be awarded, the faculty member or program manager completes the Application for Non-College Sponsered Credit available from the Registrar's Office and submits it to the Registrar's Office for entry on the student's transcript.

V. Review Process

1. The appropriate Assessment and Certification Center manager (PEP process owner) is responsible for coordinating an annual review of PEP exams to ensure they remain current with course content.

2. The Program Development Office is responsible for coordinating an annual review of competency-based assessments. This review process should be held at the beginning of the fall term for the next academic year, so the correct information is placed in the catalog.

3. Faculty who teach the courses corresponding to the PEP exams or competency-based assessments will participate in the review. The appropriate campus dean will approve any recommended modifications to an exam or assessment.

4. Results of the annual review will be documented and maintained by the office coordinating the review process.
